London, Midweek Explorers go Out and About in Borough

21 August 2019

11:00 - 15:30

London Bridge - Science Gallery Cafe
St Thomas's Street/Great Maze Pond
United Kingdom

All comers£0.00

Today we visit the Borough area of Southwark.

Our meeting point is the London Science Gallery café in the King’s College Campus. When Roger and Judy were doing the recce for this walk, they reached the cafe via the Courtyard in St Thomas Street, SE1 (exit London Bridge Station via the Shard exit, cross St Thomas Street and turn right, the Couryard is just on the left and the cafe is on the left inside the Courtyard gates) but you can reach the cafe also from the main entrance in Great Maze Pond.

For those who wish, we will meet for coffee on the terrace if the weather is appropriate, or inside if not.  We will set off promptly at 11.15.

Our walk takes us along St Thomas Street, where there are good opportunities for photography, until we take a left on Borough High Street and continue to the George Inn (a galleried coaching inn) and onto Southwark War Memorial.

Where we now are is busy, vibrant area and there are many opportunities for photography.

We continue to Southwark Street, passing the Hop Exchange, until we find Redcross Way, where we will visit Crossbones Gardens, (well worth a visit – here is a link) and a little further along, Redcross Garden - link here.  .

Then we make our way to nearby Union Street where we have the opportunity to visit the London Salon of Photography 2019 Exhibition, link here  (Many London Salon Photographers are members of the RPS and may be known to some of you).

There are a variety of cafes and restaurants in the immediate vicinity for lunch (next door to the gallery for example at a cafe called 'Gentlement Barrisers', the poached eggs on toast with breakfast tea are great!)

This is not a long walk but (we think) it has lots of photographic and historical interest.   We hope you do too!..  If you wish to continue afterwards, in your own time, you may wish to visit the nearby Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral and/or take a walk along the South Bank and all that is on offer there..

For those heading straight home, Southwark and Blackfriars stations are nearby, or you may wish to make your way back to Borough tube or London Bridge stations. Buses, of course, available at all good bus stops.

Reminder – we have a Flickr group for photos taken on these walks. It would be great if more of you joined up…… here is a link
