Carolyn’s portrait Maria, 10 is touring the UK in the International Photography Exhibition 160 (IPE 160), showing at the Civic in Barnsley from 28 April to 9 June 2018. She won the Gold Award in 2016 edition of the IPE with Alice, 10, a portrait which was also selected for the BJP’s 2017 Portrait of Britain, displayed on advertising screens in busy stations and shopping centres nationwide.

The young girls from the series Being Inbetween are presented as the strong, unique individuals they wish to be. All aged 10 to 12, they sit somewhere between childhood and teenage years, a time of great change and complexity. The work arises from my own memories of being this age and the desire to give voice and faces to the young women who inevitably must pass through these mysterious hinterland (…) a way to explore the hidden complexity, duality and contradictions that mark this phase of life.” Says Carolyn.

Each portrait is accompanied by a quote from the subject and common themes emerge in the statements of kindness, ambition, optimism, self-awareness, understanding and openness.

“I wish to stop the world from being unkind” Imogen, 11.

“I really love my dancing; it is one of my passions. It makes me feel elated, all happy and bouncy. It makes me feel like I can do anything. When I am an adult I want to be a cardiac surgeon because the heart really interests me.” Gowri, 12.

“My dream is to become a good teacher so I can help children overcome their difficulties, so they cam become great people like doctors and prime ministers” Maria, 10.

Carolyn Mendelsohn is an artist, photographer and film maker (carolyn-mendelsohn.format.com), and is exhibiting the Being Inbetween series at the Crossley Gallery in Halifax until 20 May.
